Carl Froch dominated a inexplicably timid Arthur Abraham in Helsinki on Saturday night to re-gain his WBC super middleweight championship. Froch never looked in any danger as he used his superior length and boxing ability to pepper King Arthur with probing jabs and stylish combinations.
After the fight Abraham offered no explanations or excuses, perhaps appropriate given how thoroughly he was outclassed. Abraham won only a single round out of all three scorecards, more than likely awarded out of pity by a soft-hearted judge. It would be surprisingly to see him step into the ring with Andre Ward for the semifinals, if only because he has looked out of his depth at 168 lbs. in his last two fights.
Froch is fast becoming one of my favorite fighters thanks to his willingness to continuously fight the best and almost always come out on top. Save the close setback to Kessler he has fought and defeated almost all of the big names surrounding the division. But to gain a shot at Ward and unifying the belts in the Super Six final he will have to first oust the rugged “Road Warrior” Glen Johnson.
Johnson looked surprisingly lively in stopping Allen Green earlier this month and should pose a formidable challenge for Froch, especially given the apparent ease at which he dropped down from light heavyweight. “The Cobra” will need one of his best performances to come out on top, but regardless it seems like we’re going to have an exciting ending to the Super Six even after the defections of half the original field.
