Alistair Overeem Stops Sluggish Junior Dos Santos

In the first round the fighters spent a long time feeling each other out, which is a prudent decision when you’re fighting such a large person. It was a far cry from the old Overeem, who used to just blitz. Overeem is as chinny as you would expect for a blown up light heavyweight that has been in the sport for so long.

There was so little early action that they showed a stat about who was advancing the most. This was the sort of round for which 10–10 scores were invented. At 4:30 Goldie asked “Who will unleash the first combination?

Overeem landed a punch which cut Junior’s nose and a few kicks, so I guess he won the round, but that’s not saying much.

In the second round Junior started off by demolishing the junk of the Demolition Man. It was the best shot he landed all fight. We couldn’t see what the corners said, but hopefully Junior’s corner told him Overeem has no fucking chin and he just needs to blitz him once and he’ll win the fight.

It didn’t appear that that message was sent, because Junior continued dicking around at the periphery. His corner should have been like, “Hey Junior, Ben Rothwell knocked this fucker out, just pour it on him for like 10 seconds.”

Instead Junior dropped leg kicks like he was getting paid by the minute. Overeem landed a big left and cut up Junior’s eye at the four-minute mark. Junior kept landing shitty kicks the whole round. Junior fought like an idiot. He finally landed a pair of punches to the body, but Overeem blocked the headshots. Junior stood no chance fighting that way

Overeem landed a single left hand and referee Big Dan stopped the fight as Junior stood up. It was a terrible stoppage for a terrible fight, but few will express outrage. Junior just wasn’t doing shit.
